Rita Sutcliffe earned a BFA at University of Michigan, MFA at Eastern Michigan university Ecole d’Art Nationale, Nice, France.  Sutcliffe taught at Tennessee Tech University and Tennessee Community College.  Sutcliffe has had one-woman shows in Tennessee.

Sculptress Rita Sutcliffe Devotes Energies to Career

In June 1976, Rita Sutcliffe resigned as Art Instructor and Coordinator at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tennessee to “devote all my energies to my career as an artist.” A step in that direction will be her participation in the International Sculpture Symposium to be held October 11 through November 30 here in Liberty Hill.

Sutcliffe had held the position at Volunteer State Community College since 1972. Prior to that she was Art Coordinator in Fentress County Schools in Jamestown, Tennessee and Extension Program Instructor at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee.

Besides Bachelor degrees from the University of Michigan and a Masters from Eastern Michigan University, she has studied in France for several months during 1975. She attended the Ecole Nationale d’ Art Decoratif and the Potterie d-Ardeche.

She says, “In the past five years, I have created two separate art programs. The first program was a county­wide art program, grades 1-12. The second was the establishment of a complete two-year art curriculum at Volunteer State Community College. ”
She participated in the following exhibitions in Nashville, Tennessee: Cheekwood Galleries, Parthenon Galleries, Gallery III and The Art Pavillion. In Cookeville, Tennessee, she exhibited at the Tennessee Technological University Galleries and the Cumberland Art Society Gallery.

Ms. Sutcliffe enjoys travel. She has traveled abroad three times. She has visited England, France, Italy, Spain, Greece and Tunisia.
